Week 5

In Literacy, we have been very busy spelling words with the long /e/ (ee/ea) sound. We enjoyed cutting up our spelling words into syllables and swapping our cards with a partner. We chose a character from the movie ‘Brave’ and described their appearance and personality. In reading, we have been focusing on the comprehension strategy – making connections.

In Numeracy, we have been focusing on adding a string of numbers. This week Pippa and Ella are sharing our learning with you. I have included a google slide of the addition strategy to aid discussion at home.

We have had fun learning about farming in Scotland and researching the farming year. We watched a series of video clips and worked with a partner to select facts from each video. Today, we have enjoyed celebrating Scottish Diversity Day. We talked about what Scotland meant to us and designed a new Scottish flag.

Week 4

In Literacy, we have been very busy spelling words with the long /a/ sound. We used spelling actions to help us code our words. We have written a character description about a cartoon character and identified adjectives in each other’s work.  We have been spotting patterns in our reading books and looking for clues in the text.

In Numeracy, we have been focusing on addition and subtraction strategies. We have decided that we would like to share our weekly strategies with you in our google classroom. Each week a video will be released explaining the strategies we are covering. This week Jemma and James are sharing our learning with you. Once the children are familiar with the strategies, then they can apply the strategy to larger numbers and more complex word problems. We hope this will help with learning at home.

This week we worked in a group to identify cities, rivers and mountain ranges in Scotland. We used information sheets and an atlas to help us. We then completed our own maps.

We are Confident Individual and Successful Learners!

Daniela is proud of her spelling

Jemma is proud of her Scotland map

Mia is proud of her reading

Emilia is proud of her basic facts

Cailean is proud of his maths

Naomi is proud of learning her five times table

Mirren, Harris, Ella and Lewis are all proud that they moved up to the next basic fact

Anniyah is proud of her platinum words

Week 3

This week we have been learning to use different strategies to help us add and subtract multiples of ten to three digit numbers. We have been focusing on the following strategies – place value , partitioning and number lines. We know it is very important to be able to use a variety of strategies in our Numeracy lessons. We would love to share these strategies with you at home this weekend.

We completed a SHANARRI diary this week and thought about examples for each indicator. In our film Study, we spent time learning about the impact of Vikings on Scotland.

In Literacy, we successfully learned to spell words this the long /a/ (a-e) sound. We are proud that we were able to code these words. We are also very proud of the descriptive writing we all completed and we were all able to self assess our work carefully.

Week Two

In Literacy, we have successfully learned to spell words with short vowel sounds. All spelling words are available to practice at home on the google classroom. In writing, our focus has been on using adjectives and adverbs to add detail into our sentences. We have been learning about visualisation through our reading books.

In Numeracy, we have been focusing on addition and subtraction strategies. Our focus this week has been on adding/ subtracting 1 digit numbers to/from 3 digit numbers and adding/subtracting 10 or 100 to/from 3 digit numbers. We have been talking about the different strategies that we can use and deciding what strategy works best for each of us.

We have spent time reflecting on our learning from term one and discussing what it means to be a ‘Successful Learner’. We enjoyed spending time selecting work for our profile jotters and discussing our hopes and dreams for the rest of the year.

We have started a film study based on the movie ‘Brave’. We are using the Pixar movie as a stimulus for exploring Scotland. This week our learning has focused on Scottish clans and the history of tartan.

Please find our learning overview for term 2 attached below.

This Friday

Diversity Day

Halloween Themed

It’s that time of the month again, but this time with a twist!

Come dressed up on Friday 30th October in your choice of costume.

There will be a special day planned for you and also the chance of entering a competition to win a prize.

Looking forward to seeing you dressed up (if you choose to be yourself then that is okay).

Week 9 – Happy Holidays!

We are very proud of all our hard work this term! We worked very hard to create our own SHANARRI wheels. We explored the wellbeing indicators and designed our own characters for each aspect of the wheel. Please ask your child to explain the wheel at home and share their SHANARRI story with you.

Have a great holiday!

Our Learning – week 8

We were very busy last week creating our beautiful Autumn tree pictures inspired by the artistic style, Cubism. We used a range of geometric shapes and autumnal colours in our art work.

We have been creating our own SHANARRI characters to help improve our understanding of the wellbeing indicators. We look forward to sharing our work with you before the end of the term!

In Numeracy, we have been working hard to count forward and backwards in 25s, 50s and 100s starting at different numbers. We have continued to work with number sequences and are able to add/subtract 1s,10s, 100s and 1000s from a range of numbers. We spent some time thinking about number patterns and discussing the difficulty of crossing over into new 100s (for example – 316,306,296,286). We are working out strategies to help us!

In Literacy, we have been working hard to spell words with the short /o/ sound. We been using our reading books to help us identify different types of punctuation, words and thinking about how we could improve the book. We have been developing our understanding of story planning and have created our own story plan.

It was a busy week! One more week to go until the holidays!

Our Learning – Week 7

This week our Health and Wellbeing work has focused on memories. We have explored how our brain helps us make and store memories. The movie Inside Out helped us explore the concept of ‘core memories’. We created an abstract oil pastel drawing of our own memories. We used different colours to help us represent the wide range of emotions we connect with our own memories.

In Numeracy, we have been working on reading and writing numbers up to 1000 and beyond. We have began to explore calendars and talk about important dates in our school year. In Literacy, we have been working very hard to use openers and connectives in our sentences. We have been exploring setting through reading group discussions. We all successfully managed to spell words with the short /i/ sound this week!

Well done Primary 4!
